Polyester Fabric

What printed polyester is used for

Polyester fabric is a synthetic textile that takes printed colour well and keeps a clean finish for indoor and many semi-outdoor uses. It is often chosen for curtains, soft signage, event décor, backdrops, light upholstery, table drops and branded display pieces because it is stable, fairly light and easy to work with. For many clients, the main benefit is that the print stays crisp on the fabric rather than sitting on top with a heavy feel.

It suits homes, shops, offices, exhibitions and pop-up stands where you need a neat result without having to replace fabric too often. In Cape Town, clients also like it for coastal areas because it handles day-to-day handling better than some natural fibres, though direct sun and salty air will still shorten any printed textile over time. A good choice depends on the use, not just the image, so we check the job before printing.

  • Suitable for curtains, banners, display panels and décor
  • Available in printed runs from small batches to bulk quantities
  • Can be used for plain, repeat or full surface print layouts

Size options and print specifications

We supply polyester fabric by the metre and also in cut lengths for specific projects. Standard widths depend on the fabric type selected, and the finished width needs to be checked against your pattern repeats, hems and seam joins. If you are ordering for curtains or a wide display panel, it helps to allow extra for making up and for any shrinkage after the first wash, even if polyester is generally stable.

Typical jobs include metreage for small décor runs, matched repeats for retail ranges and larger bulk print runs for campaigns or fittings across several branches. We can work from customer artwork, help with repeat pattern setup and carry out file checking before print. Where colour matters, we can provide strike-off sampling so you can see the result before committing to a larger order. That step often saves time and money, especialy on corporate work.

  • Custom widths and metreage to suit the project
  • Single prints, repeat patterns and full coverage layouts
  • Strike-off sampling available for colour and scale approval
  • File checking recommended for seam placement and repeat accuracy

Where polyester fabric works best

Polyester is a practical choice when the fabric needs to look good and hold up under regular handling. It is commonly used for shop displays, printed flags, office fit-outs, exhibition stands and branded interior pieces. For décor, it works well on scatter cushions, light decorative panels and statement curtains where a printed image or repeat pattern is part of the design.

For fashion or craft work, printed polyester can also be used for items that need colour and structure without being too heavy. In coastal suburbs, or in venues that keep doors open for long periods, polyester can be easier to manage than heavier cottons because it dries quicker after cleaning and is less prone to staying damp. It is not the answer for every job, but it is a dependable middle-ground for many everyday applications.

  • Good for signage, décor, flags and exhibition use
  • Useful for retail, hospitality and residential projects
  • Can be specified for light to medium wear depending on finish

Installation and what your space needs

Most polyester fabric does not need power or gas to install. What it needs is the correct make-up method, the right support system and enough space for the finished piece. Curtains need tracks, rods or rails. Flags and banners need poles, hems, loops or eyelets. Display fabric may need frames, tension systems or simple hanging points. If the print is going into a shop, showroom or office in Cape Town, we usually ask for measurements of the wall, window or frame before production starts.

For indoor use, installation is generally straightforward and can be done by your own contractor or curtain maker. For large-format hanging pieces, check ceiling height, access to the area and whether the fabric will need fire treatment for municipal or venue rules. In some venues, especially in hospitality or public spaces, the manager may ask for compliance documents. Tell us early so we can advise on the right finish and avoid delays.

  • No direct power or gas is needed for the fabric itself
  • Support systems may include rails, rods, frames or eyelets
  • Fire requirements may apply in public or commercial venues

Care, cleaning and everyday servicing

Printed polyester is usually easier to care for than many heavier woven fabrics, but it still needs sensible handling. Light dusting or a gentle vacuum with a soft attachment helps for curtains and fixed décor. For washable items, follow the care advice for the specific finish and avoid harsh bleach or very hot water unless the job is designed for it. Strong detergents can fade print over time, even on good fabric.

If the fabric is used in a busy business space, a regular check for loose hems, frayed edges or tension points will help it last longer. Repairing a small edge problem early is cheaper than replacing the whole piece. In humid areas or where aircon is switched off during load-shedding, make sure damp fabric is fully dried before storing it, otherwise you can get a musty smell or surface marking.

  • Use gentle cleaning methods where possible
  • Keep printed fabric dry before packing or storage
  • Inspect hems, joins and tension points after heavy use

What to check before you order

Before placing an order, it helps to confirm the final size, the intended use, how the fabric will be finished and how many repeats or panels are needed. If you are matching existing décor or brand colours, send a sample, artwork file or clear reference image. It is also worth checking whether the fabric will be seen in daylight, under warm indoor light or in a bright retail space, because colour can read differently in each setting.

We recommend confirming the following: the measurement in metres, the fabric width, whether seams are acceptable, the type of hem or edge finish and the turnaround time. For courier orders nationwide, please include the delivery suburb, contact number and any access notes for estates, offices or loading bays. That makes packing and dispatch smoother, and it avoids a back and forth at the last minute.
