Strand Seaside Apartment

For this Strand holiday apartment, Fabric Printers Studio supplied custom printed blinds and scatter fabrics to suit a light, modern coastal interior. The brief called for clean colour, practical fabrics, and a finish that would handle sun, salt air and regular guest use.

Strand Seaside Apartment

A coastal apartment that needed calm, not clutter

The client was a private apartment owner in Strand, working on a holiday let close to the beach. The space had good natural light, white walls, pale floors and a simple modern layout, so the fabric work needed to feel easy and refined rather than loud. The aim was to add personality without making the rooms feel busy.

The brief focused on two items: custom printed blinds for the main living areas, and scatter fabrics for the lounge and bedrooms. The owner wanted a soft coastal look with enough contrast to hold up in photos and still feel relaxed in person. Because the apartment would be used by short-stay guests, the textiles also had to be practical, washable and suited to everyday handling.

  • Property type: seaside holiday apartment
  • Location: Strand, Western Cape
  • Key need: light, modern, guest-friendly fabrics
  • Main items: printed blinds and scatter fabrics

Measuring up to the apartment’s light and salt air

Coastal interiors bring their own challenges. In Strand, strong sun can fade fabric quickly, and the humid air near the sea means finishes need to be chosen with care. The owner also wanted products that would keep their shape and colour through normal use, even when windows stayed open for ventilation. That meant we had to think about fabric base, print method and finishing from the start.

The apartment had broad windows and a few tight corners, so the blind measurements had to be checked properly before print and finish. We also had to match the soft furnishings to the existing paint and flooring, which left little room for trial and error. The design direction had to remain clean and timeless, because holiday rentals need to appeal to a wide range of guests and not only one taste.

  • Constraint 1: strong coastal light
  • Constraint 2: humidity and salt exposure
  • Constraint 3: guest turnover and daily wear
  • Constraint 4: colour had to suit existing finishes

Printing the fabric to suit the scheme

We started with file checking and colour matching, then set up the artwork for repeat where needed. The blind fabric needed a controlled pattern scale so the look stayed neat across larger window spans, while the scatter fabric could carry a slightly softer motif. We kept the palette in pale blues, sand tones and muted greys, with enough depth to stop the rooms from feeling flat. It was the kind of project where tiny shifts in tone matter a lot.

After testing the artwork, we produced a strike-off sample for approval before the main run. That let the client see the print in natural light and compare it against the apartment’s finishes. Once signed off, we moved to production on the final lengths and made sure the cuts were accurate for the blind panels and scatter covers. The result was a set of fabrics that worked together without looking matchy-matchy, which is usually the better route in a small holiday space.

  • Colour matched to the apartment’s existing palette
  • Repeat patterns set for larger blind panels
  • Strike-off sampling approved before full print
  • Final fabric printed in usable lengths for finishers

Finishing details that matter in short-stay properties

For a holiday apartment, the finish is as important as the print. We handled hemming and finishing on the blind fabric so the edges would sit straight and the install team could work without delay. The scatter fabrics were also finished for clean closing and easy use. In a property like this, guests should notice the look, not the join lines or uneven hems.

The print and finish package was prepared over a 2 week production window, with clear sign-off at each step. Because the project was local to Cape Town, the turnaround was kept tight, but still allowed time for approval and careful packing. That balance helps when a client is working to a handover date or a summer booking calendar. We packed the finished items for courier collection and delivery to the Strand address, with labels that made installation straightforward.

  • Production time: 2 weeks
  • Included: hemming, finishing and packing
  • Delivery: couriered from Ndabeni to Strand
  • Use case: holiday letting with quick guest changeovers

What the apartment gained from custom printed fabric

The finished rooms felt brighter and more considered. The blinds softened the window lines without blocking the open, airy feel of the apartment, and the scatter fabrics pulled the living spaces together with a calm coastal note. The owner wanted something distinctive but still easy to rent out, and that is exactly where custom fabric does its best work. It gives a space identity without making it difficult to style later.

There was also a practical gain. The fabrics were chosen and finished with the apartment’s day to day use in mind, so they are easier to maintain and less likely to look tired after a season or two. For a seaside unit that sees sun, sand and constant use, that matters more than people often expect. The overall result was tidy, light and suitable for both owner stays and paying guests, which was the real goal from the start.

What we would repeat on a similar Strand brief

If we were doing this kind of apartment again, we would follow the same process. Start with a proper site measure, confirm the colour direction against actual wall and floor finishes, then run a strike-off before the full print. That saves time and keeps everyone aligned before production starts. For coastal holiday properties, it is usually better to keep the palette controlled and let the texture and print scale do the work.

We would also recommend planning the finish stage around the install date, especially where the owner is coordinating cleaners, furniture movers and key handover. It is a small thing, but it keeps the whole job moving. Projects like this show why custom printed fabric is useful in Cape Town and along the coast: it gives the owner a tailored result without needing large quantities or complicated sourcing.
