Durbanville Nursery Room

This Durbanville nursery project called for soft printed fabrics that felt calm, practical and easy to live with. We supplied custom curtains, cushions and wall décor textiles, all printed to suit the room and the family’s daily use.

Durbanville Nursery Room

A calm nursery brief in Durbanville

The client was a young family in Durbanville fitting out a new nursery in a suburban home with strong morning light and a need for soft, restful colour. They wanted printed textiles that felt personal rather than store-bought, with enough detail to make the room special but not busy for a baby’s space.

The brief covered curtains, scatter cushions and a fabric panel for wall décor. The room had to stay gentle in tone, practical to wash, and suitable for a layout that would later grow with the child. They also needed the fabrics to work in a room with a standard residential window size and a fitted rail, so repeat placement and finished dimensions had to be checked carefully.

What we had to work around

Nursery work sounds simple until the practical points start adding up. The client wanted print clarity, but no hard contrast, and the room sat in a home where light levels change through the day, especially in summer. The textiles also had to cope with routine cleaning, some humidity in winter, and everyday handling around toys, feeding chairs and changing supplies.

  • Soft palette with low visual noise
  • Safe, child-friendly feel without loose decorative pieces
  • Fabric suitable for curtains, cushions and a wall feature
  • Reliable repeat alignment across multiple items
  • Finish that would hold up to regular domestic use

We also checked the fabric weights against each use. Curtains needed enough body to hang neatly, while the cushions required a tighter finish at the seams. The wall décor piece had to stay flat and present cleanly from across the room, not pucker at the edges.

Our print and finishing approach

We set up the artwork as a coordinated nursery print so the different pieces sat together visually without becoming repetitive. Colour matching was handled first, because a soft design can easily drift too cool or too warm once it is printed. We tested the palette against daylight conditions and adjusted the tones until the overall effect stayed gentle. The final set used pale neutrals, muted blush and a small amount of sage for balance.

  • Repeat pattern setup for consistent flow across curtains and cushions
  • File checking to clean up line work and keep edges crisp
  • Colour matching to suit a calm nursery interior
  • Strike-off sampling before the full run
  • Hemming and finishing for ready-to-install curtain panels

The curtains were printed as a matched pair, with the pattern placed to keep the main motif visible when the panels are drawn. Cushions were printed on matching fabric from the same run, which kept colour variation to a minimum. For the wall décor panel, we supplied a clean square print that could be framed or mounted by the client’s installer.

Production timeline and turnaround

This project moved from first artwork review to final packing in just under three weeks. Week one covered file checks, palette approval and a strike-off sample. In week two we ran the main print job, then allowed time for inspection and finishing. Week three was used for packing, final checks and courier handover from our Ndabeni base in Cape Town.

The client appreciated that we did not rush the sampling stage. Nursery work is the sort of job where a small colour change can affect the whole room, so it was worth taking the extra time to get the tone right. Once approved, the rest of the production ran to plan, and the finished items were ready for dispatch without delays.

The final room and the result

Once installed, the room felt calmer and more complete. The curtains softened the light, the cushions tied the bed and chair area together, and the wall décor fabric gave the room a point of interest without making it busy. The printed details added personality, but the palette stayed light enough for day-to-day use.

From a practical point of view, the family got a coordinated set instead of having to source separate items from different suppliers. That made the room easier to finish, and it also meant the fabrics could be replaced or added to later if they wanted matching pieces. The end result was tidy, homely and easy to maintain, which is what nursery work should be.

  • Better light control through the curtain panels
  • Coordinated look across soft furnishings
  • Print quality kept crisp on close view and from across the room
  • Finished items ready for domestic installation

What we would repeat on a similar job

If we were doing the same type of nursery again, we would keep the same process: sample first, approve colour under daylight, then print the full set in one coordinated run. That method works well for home interiors because it keeps the finish consistent from piece to piece. It also saves time later if the client wants extra cushions or a second curtain pair.

For families in Durbanville, Bellville and the northern suburbs, this approach suits homes where the room has to do more than look good in a photo. It needs to hold up to practical use, changing light and real cleaning habits. That is the point of custom printed fabric: the design is chosen for the room, not forced into it.
