Sea Point Guesthouse

For this Sea Point guesthouse project, we supplied custom printed curtains and cushions to freshen up the coastal interior without losing the calm, practical feel needed for short-stay rooms. The brief called for good colour control, hard-wearing fabric and a finish that would hold up to regular guest use near the Atlantic.

Sea Point Guesthouse

Guesthouse refresh in Sea Point

The client was a small guesthouse operator in Sea Point, Cape Town, working through a room-by-room refresh before peak travel periods. The aim was not a full rebuild. It was to improve the look of the rooms, bring in a lighter coastal feel, and use printed fabric in a way that would still be easy to clean and maintain.

The property sits close to the sea, so the owner needed textiles that would cope with salt air, humidity and frequent opening of windows. The guesthouse also had mixed room sizes, which meant the curtains could not be treated as a one-size job. We had to work with existing rail positions, different drop lengths and a few window bays that were slightly out of square.

Because the rooms were still in use during the programme, the order had to be split into measured stages. That allowed the client to keep bookings running while we completed sampling, printing and finishing in batches.

Brief, constraints and fabric choices

The main brief was to create custom printed curtains and scatter cushions that would feel fresh, coastal and clean without using anything too busy. The guesthouse wanted soft neutral tones with a subtle pattern, so the rooms would photograph well and still appeal to different types of travellers.

We looked at three practical constraints before print started:

  • colour had to stay consistent from one room to the next
  • fabrics needed enough body for curtains and enough wear resistance for cushions
  • the final items had to be packed for safe courier delivery and simple on-site installation

For the curtain fabric, we selected a mid-weight base that held print detail well and hung neatly. For the cushions, we used a slightly firmer cloth so seams would keep their shape after repeated handling. The palette leaned into sand, mist grey, muted blue and off-white, with pattern scale kept moderate so the room would not feel crowded.

Sampling and approval before bulk work

We started with file checking and repeat pattern setup, then produced a strike-off sample for colour approval. This step mattered because Sea Point light changes quickly through the day and the client wanted the print to sit well in both morning light and late afternoon shade. A tone that looked soft in the studio could have gone too flat in the rooms, so we checked it before full production.

After the sample was approved, we moved into bulk print runs for the curtain panels and smaller batch printing for the cushion covers. The files were checked again before each stage and the print settings were kept consistent across the run. Anika van Wyk handled production planning with Siyabonga Dlamini on print control, which helped keep the colour finish steady from panel to panel.

  • strike-off sampling for final colour sign-off
  • repeat pattern setup for matching curtain drops
  • file checking before every print stage
  • batch control for room-to-room consistency

Curtain making, cushion finishing and packing

Once printing was complete, we handled hemming and finishing to the required measurements. Curtain lengths varied by room, and some windows needed a slightly fuller gather to suit the proportions of the space. We measured, cut and finished each set to avoid odd pooling at the floor or a short drop that would have looked untidy.

The cushions were finished with clean edge seams and packed in sets by room. This made installation easier for the guesthouse team and reduced the risk of covers getting mixed up. Thabo Molefe managed dispatch and logistics, while packing lists were matched to the room schedule so the client could place each item quickly. One of the window recesses needed a tighter drop than expected, but the final line held well once installed.

We also advised on basic care for the printed fabric. In a guesthouse setting, it is useful to have a simple wash routine and a spare cushion cover set aside for quick changeovers during busy weekends.

Timeline, delivery and on-site result

The full job ran over three weeks from first brief to final dispatch. Week one covered measurement, fabric selection and sample approval. Week two was print production and initial finishing. Week three covered the remaining hemming, packing and courier handover.

Because the client was based in Sea Point and we operate from Ndabeni, Cape Town, the handover was straightforward and the courier run stayed local. The finished curtains softened the rooms and gave the windows a more ordered look, while the cushions tied the bed and seating areas together. The guesthouse owner wanted a result that felt calm but still had character, and that balance was achieved without making the spaces feel heavy.

  • 3 week turnaround from brief to courier handover
  • custom sizes for mixed room layouts
  • coastal colour palette suited to guestroom use
  • printed and finished in Cape Town for faster coordination

What we would repeat on the next guesthouse project

For a similar guesthouse in Sea Point, Green Point or Camps Bay, we would use the same process again: sample first, confirm the lighting conditions, then run the print and finishing in controlled batches. That approach gives the client more certainty on colour and keeps reorders simple later on.

We would also keep a small record of each room size and fabric usage from the outset. For hospitality work, that saves time when a curtain or cushion cover needs replacing after heavy use. In coastal settings, it is worth planning for a spare set per room because salt air and frequent opening of windows can shorten the life of softer furnishings.

Fabric Printers Studio continues to work with guesthouses, small hotels and fitted interior projects across Cape Town and nationwide by courier. If a project needs custom printed curtains, printed cushions or matching fabric by the metre, we can handle the print, finishing and dispatch from Ndabeni.
