Why sample orders matter before a full print run
A sample order is the practical way to test your artwork on the actual fabric you plan to use. It helps with colour accuracy, repeat alignment, image sharpness and how the cloth feels after printing and finishing.
This is especially useful for curtains, upholstery, fashion pieces and branded items where the final look must be right the first time. If your design has fine detail, pale tones or a dark base fabric, a strike-off can save time and prevent costly reprints.
- Check colour against your original artwork or Pantone reference
- Confirm scale, placement and repeat pattern flow
- See how the print behaves on the chosen fabric type
- Test hemming, lining or finishing before bulk production
Choose between a swatch, strike-off or short run
Not every project needs the same sample format. A swatch is useful when you want a small piece to feel the fabric and inspect the print surface. A strike-off is better when you need to verify layout, repeat and colour on a realistic section of the design.
For some jobs, especially where the artwork is simple, a small batch print may be the right sample stage. Our team can advise on the best option based on your fabric choice, order size and end use. We work with clients in Ndabeni, Woodstock, Salt River, Observatory, Montague Gardens and Century City, with courier delivery nationwide.
- Swatch for texture and basic colour testing
- Strike-off for repeats, placement and final approval
- Small batch sample for product testing or retail trials
What to send with your artwork files
Good sample work starts with clear files and simple instructions. Before we start, send the artwork in the preferred format, along with the fabric type you want, the finished size, and any notes on repeat or placement. If you need colour matching, include a reference or sample to compare against.
If your file needs checking, our team can review it before printing. That includes checking resolution, edges, repeats and whether text or logos are large enough for the intended use. It is better to catch a problem at sample stage than after a full order is already on the press.
- Artwork file with the correct dimensions
- Fabric type or intended application
- Colour notes or physical reference sample
- Any hemming, cutting or finishing instructions
How the sample process works at our Ndabeni studio
Once we receive your files and instructions, we confirm the sample brief and the fabric options available. If sourcing is needed, we will guide you on suitable cloth for curtains, upholstery, flags or fashion use. After that, the sample is printed, checked and prepared for collection or courier.
In Cape Town, some clients prefer to collect from Ndabeni, especially when they need to compare samples quickly with their own samples or showroom fabrics. Others have us pack and courier the sample to sites in Gauteng, KZN, the Eastern Cape and other areas across South Africa. During load shedding, planning matters too, so we keep communication clear on timing and production status.
- Send artwork and sample notes
- Confirm fabric and finishing options
- Approve the sample brief
- Receive your sample for review
- Place the larger run once approved
Using sample orders for curtains, upholstery and apparel
Different products need different checks. Curtains must drape properly and show colour well in natural light. Upholstery needs print durability and a finish that suits regular use. Apparel fabric has to feel right against the skin and hold its look after cutting and sewing.
For home, retail or business use, a sample gives you a real view of the end result. It is also useful when a design will be shown to a client, tenant, buyer or event organiser before the main order is approved. That extra step can prevent awkward surprises later on.
- Curtains: colour, drop and light response
- Upholstery: print wear and fabric strength
- Fashion: hand feel, drape and repeat scale
- Flags: visibility, edge finish and overall impact
Placing your larger order after approval
After you approve the sample, we can move into small batch printing or bulk print runs with a clear brief. If changes are needed, we adjust the file, colour or repeat before the full order goes ahead. That makes the final production process smoother and helps control wastage.
Our packing and courier team can then prepare the completed order for delivery. Whether you are ordering fabric by the metre, finished curtains, or printed textile for a business project, the sample stage gives you a cleaner handover and fewer headaches later.
